Chetola Resort has a diverse history dating back to 1846 when Chetola's first recorded owner, Lot Estes, purchased 100 acres for a mere 5 cents per acre. At the end of the 19th Century, Chetola was purchased by William Stringfellow from Alabama, who actually named the estate "Chetola" and believed this mountain retreat would improve his failing health... and it did. The most colorful of Chetola's owners bought the estate in 1926. Luther Snyder was a self-made man and was known as the "Coca-Cola King of the Carolinas."

Luther Snyder entertained frequently at the estate and often invited the entire community. All of Blowing Rock loved the Snyder's celebrations. The Manor House Estate provided the perfect backdrop during this "Golden Age" at Chetola. This glorious era came to an end when Luther passed away in 1957 at the age of 83.

Today Chetola is owned by Rachael Renar and her son, Kent Tarbutton, originally from Virginia Beach. This family has been unwavering in its efforts to retain the historic enchantment that has existed at Chetola since its beginnings.

The Bob Timberlake Inn at Chetola personifies this bygone era at Chetola. No detail has been untouched including a fireplace in each room and authentic period facets throughout. The historic charm continues in the Manor House Restaurant where dining guests relive the past by selecting delicious meals representing a historic event or occasion. Each room in the Bob Timberlake Inn is named for a past owner of Chetola or prominent local personality.
